Fixed, vertical road traffic signs - Part 1: Fixed signs
Also Known As:
DIN EN 12899-1 is a standard that specifies the requirements for fixed, vertical road traffic signs. The standard covers various types of fixed signs, including non-retroreflective and retroreflective signs, signs illuminated at night by external lighting luminaries, and transilluminated signs. These signs are primarily used for instructing and guiding road users on both public and private land.
The standard defines performance limits and a range of performance classes for sign assemblies with and without vertical supports, as well as sign faces, supporting substrates, sign fixings, supports, and external lighting luminaries. It also specifies colorimetric and retroreflective properties, as well as luminance requirements. The retroreflective properties are based on the use of glass bead technology.
Structural requirements for signs and sign supports are also included in the standard, ensuring performance under static and dynamic loading. Additionally, the standard sets out performance levels that must be maintained after exposure to natural weathering.
Amendment 1 to DIN EN 12899-1 expands the scope of the standard and includes updates to performance requirements, methods of test, evaluation of conformity, and the addition of Annex ZA.
