The DIN EN 12111 standard is focused on ensuring safety requirements for road headers and continuous miners used in tunneling operations. It addresses all significant hazards, hazardous situations, and events that may occur during the operation of these machines. The standard covers machines used as intended and also takes into account reasonably foreseeable misuse scenarios.
It is important to note that this standard does not consider the risk of the road header or continuous miner overturning as a significant hazard within its intended use. It also specifies that excavators are not within the scope of this standard and are covered by other standards.
There are certain aspects that are explicitly excluded from the scope of this European Standard. These include the supply of electricity up to the switch box, use of the machine in potentially explosive atmospheres, use of the machine under hyperbaric conditions, and loading and transport equipment that is not an integral part of the machine.
Additionally, the standard covers the incorporation of monitoring devices for hazardous atmospheres to enhance safety measures during the operation of these machines.
