The Eurocode 9 standard, specifically EN 1999-1-4, is part of a set of design standards for aluminium structures. It focuses on the design of cold-formed structural sheeting made from aluminium. The standard is intended to ensure the safety, serviceability, durability, and fire resistance of aluminium structures.
EN 1999-1-4 provides design requirements for cold-formed trapezoidal aluminium sheeting, which includes products made from hot rolled or cold rolled sheet or strip that have undergone cold-forming processes like cold-rolled forming or press-breaking. The execution of structures made of cold-formed sheeting is covered in another standard, EN 1090-3.
This part of the standard complements other parts of EN 1999-1 and provides methods for stressed-skin design using aluminium sheeting as a structural diaphragm. However, it does not apply to cold-formed aluminium profiles like C- or Z-profiles, or cold-formed and welded hollow sections.
EN 1999-1-4 offers methods for design by calculation and design assisted by testing. The calculation methods have limitations in terms of material properties and geometrical properties, which are based on available experience and test evidence. However, these limitations do not apply to design by testing.
It is important to note that EN 1999-1-4 does not cover load arrangement for loads during execution and maintenance. To fully implement this standard, it should be used alongside other relevant European and national standards for construction products and conformity assessment of structural components.
