The AASHTO T 308-21 standard is a method used to determine the asphalt binder content of asphalt mixtures through the ignition method. This test is specifically designed for hot mix asphalt (HMA). The ignition process involves subjecting the specimen to high temperatures in a furnace until the flashpoint of the binder is reached. The heating of the specimen can be done through either the convection method or the direct infrared (IR) irradiation method.
Once the ignition process is completed, the remaining aggregate from the specimen can be used for further analysis, such as sieve analysis using the AASHTO T 30 method. This allows for a complete evaluation of the asphalt mixture and helps to determine its binder content accurately.
