The AASHTO T 72-10 (2019) standard provides empirical procedures for determining the Saybolt Universal or Saybolt Furol viscosities of petroleum products at specified temperatures ranging from 21 to 99°C (70 to 210°F). This method includes a special procedure for waxy products.
However, it is important to note that T 201 and ASTM D 445 are preferred methods for determining kinematic viscosity. These alternative methods require smaller samples, take less time, and offer greater accuracy. Additionally, viscosity indexes are recommended to be calculated from kinematic viscosities rather than Saybolt viscosities.
