Standard EN SampleStandard Method of Test for Emulsified Asphalts
Also Known As:
The AASHTO T 59-16 (2021) standard provides guidelines for the examination of asphalt emulsions. These emulsions are primarily composed of water, a semisolid or liquid asphalt base, and an emulsifying agent. The standard includes various test methods that fall under the categories of Composition, Consistency, Stability, and Examination of Residue.
Under the Composition section, the standard covers tests such as determining the water content, analyzing the residue and oil distillate by distillation, identifying the oil distillate through micro distillation, determining the residue by evaporation, and assessing the particle charge of cationic emulsified asphalts.
The Consistency section focuses on measuring the viscosity of the emulsions using the Saybolt Furol method.
The Stability section includes tests such as evaluating demulsibility, settlement, cement mixing, sieve test, coating ability, miscibility with water, freezing, coating ability and water resistance, and assessing the storage stability of asphalt emulsion.
Lastly, the standard includes an Examination of Residue section, followed by tests for identifying rapid setting cationic emulsified asphalt, cationic slow set emulsions, conducting field coating tests on emulsified asphalts, determining emulsified asphalt/job aggregate coating test, and measuring the weight per gallon of emulsified asphalt.
