Standard EN SampleStandard Method of Test for Determining the Fracture Properties of Asphalt Binder in Direct Tension (DT)
Also Known As:
The AASHTO T 314-12 (2021) standard provides a procedure for determining the failure strain and failure stress of asphalt binders. The test is conducted through a direct tension test, which can be performed on both unaged and aged materials. If aged materials are used, they should undergo the Rolling Thin Film Oven Test (T 240) or the Pressure Aging Vessel Test (R 28) prior to the direct tension test.
The test apparatus specified in the standard is designed to operate within a temperature range of +6 to -36°C. This temperature range allows for testing the fracture properties of asphalt binders under a wide range of environmental conditions. By measuring the failure strain and failure stress of the asphalt binder, this test method provides valuable information on the performance characteristics and durability of the material.
