Standard ENStandard Practice for Measuring Pavement Profile Using a Rod and Level
Also Known As:
AASHTO R 40-10 (2018) is a standard practice that provides guidelines for measuring the profile of a pavement using a rod and level. The profile data obtained from this method can be used to assess the roughness of the pavement by calculating roughness indices such as the International Roughness Index (IRI). It can also be used to evaluate the effects of factors like frost heave or soil swelling.
The standard practice is applicable to both conventional survey equipment, such as an optical level and graduated staff, where the readings need to be manually recorded, as well as automated equipment that can automatically store the measured data. In the case of roughness indices, only the relative elevations are required, not the absolute elevations.
