The test method involves measuring the longitudinal profile of the traveled surface using a static level. It is primarily used for validating other profile-measuring methods and calibrating response-type roughness-measuring systems. The measurement process should be evaluated to ensure that the measurements are within the required resolution, as specified in Table 1 of the standard. Factors such as wind, distance between the rod and the level, surface texture, and positioning of the rod can impact the repeatability of elevation measurements.

The standard also describes the computation required for the International Roughness Index (IRI), which is one type of roughness index obtained using this test method. Additionally, the profile obtained through this method can be processed to obtain other roughness measures. The test method includes two levels of accuracy, Class 1 and Class 2, with Class 1 providing a higher level of accuracy by reducing the measurement error to less than 2% of the true value of the roughness index. Class 2 involves errors less than 5%.
