Standard ENStandard Method of Test for Measuring Retroreflectivity of Pavement Marking Materials Using a Mobile Retroreflectivity Unit
Also Known As:
AASHTO TP 111-14 (2021) is a standard method of test for measuring the retroreflectivity of pavement marking materials using a Mobile Retroreflectivity Unit (MRU). This test is specifically designed for measuring the retroreflective properties of dry, horizontal pavement marking materials on roadways.
The MRU is a vehicle-mounted unit that operates at posted roadway speeds and follows a prescribed geometry, which is based on the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) geometry and also adopted by ASTM E 1710. This ensures consistency and accuracy in the measurement process.
The purpose of this standard is to ensure that pavement markings provide sufficient visibility at night, thereby enhancing safety on the roads. By measuring the retroreflectivity of pavement marking materials using mobile instruments, this test method allows for the evaluation and maintenance of adequate night-time visibility.
