Standard ENStandard Method of Test for Measuring Retroreflectivity of Pavement Marking Materials Using a Mobile Retroreflectivity Unit
Also Known As:
AASHTO TP 111-14 is a standard method for measuring the retroreflectivity of pavement marking materials using a Mobile Retroreflectivity Unit (MRU). The test is conducted on dry, horizontal pavement markings and is performed while the MRU is mounted on a vehicle and driven at posted roadway speeds. The test follows the prescribed geometry, which is based on the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) geometry and is also adopted by ASTM E 1710.
The purpose of this standard is to ensure that the night-time visibility provided by pavement markings is sufficient. The measurement of retroreflectivity using mobile instruments allows for a more accurate assessment of the pavement markings' performance in real-world conditions. By evaluating the retroreflective properties of the markings, transportation agencies can determine if they meet the necessary standards for visibility and road safety.
