Standard ENStandard Test Method for Measurement of Retroreflective Pavement Marking Materials with CEN-Prescribed Geometry Using a Portable Retroreflectometer
Also Known As:
ASTM E1710-18 is a standard test method that focuses on the measurement of retroreflective pavement marking materials using a portable retroreflectometer. The test method aims to determine the quality and visual performance of the pavement markings by measuring the coefficient of retroreflected luminance (RL).
The standard highlights the importance of considering factors such as the materials used, age, and wear pattern of the pavement markings, as they can affect the RL value. It states that larger values of RL correspond to higher levels of visual performance under the same illumination and viewing conditions.
The standard emphasizes the need for periodic measurement of retroreflectivity to ensure sufficient line visibility for drivers. It suggests that measurements of RL made with a retroreflectometer having a geometry corresponding to a viewing distance of 30 meters can provide a good indication of the visual ranking of the measured material. The prescribed measurement geometry, as specified by CEN (European Committee for Standardization), includes a headlight mounting height of 0.65 meters directly over the stripe and an eye height of 1.2 meters directly over the stripe.
Additionally, the standard specifies that the user is responsible for employing an instrument with the specified observation and entrance angles. The entrance and observation angles, as per CEN, are 88.76° and 1.05°, respectively.
