Standard ENStandard Method of Test for Determining the Abrasion Loss of Asphalt Mixture Specimens
Also Known As:
AASHTO TP 108-14 is a standard method of testing used to determine the abrasion loss of asphalt mixture specimens. The test is conducted using a Los Angeles abrasion machine, which is a rotating drum that contains a specified number of steel spheres. The specimens, prepared from the asphalt mixture, are placed inside the drum along with the steel spheres.
During the test, the drum is rotated at a specified speed for a predetermined number of revolutions. This causes the steel spheres to continuously impact and abrade the specimens. After the test is completed, the specimens are removed from the drum, cleaned, and weighed. The difference in weight before and after the test is used to calculate the percent abrasion loss.
AASHTO TP 108-14 provides detailed instructions on the preparation of the asphalt mixture specimens, as well as the operation of the Los Angeles abrasion machine. It specifies the test conditions, including the number of revolutions, the speed of rotation, and the size and number of steel spheres to be used. The standard also includes guidelines for reporting the test results accurately.
