Standard ENStandard Method of Test for Determining the Abrasion Loss of Asphalt Mixture Specimens
Also Known As:
AASHTO TP 108-14 (2021) is a standard method of test that provides guidelines on how to determine the abrasion loss of asphalt mixture specimens. The test is carried out using the Los Angeles abrasion machine, which is designed to simulate the abrasion experienced by asphalt pavements due to traffic and other environmental factors.
The standard outlines the procedure that needs to be followed during the test. It specifies the equipment required, such as the Los Angeles abrasion machine, sieves, and balance, as well as the preparation of the asphalt mixture specimens. The specimens are placed in the machine and subjected to a specified number of revolutions, which causes them to abrade against the steel balls within the machine.
After the required number of revolutions, the asphalt mixture specimens are sieved to determine the amount of material that has been lost due to abrasion. The percent abrasion loss is calculated by comparing the weight of the material retained on the sieve to the initial weight of the specimen.
