The ACI SP-346:2020 standard focuses on addressing the functional and economic challenges faced in the design and construction of civil infrastructure. The standard explores the use of non-conventional reinforcing and strengthening methods, such as fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) and ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), to overcome the limitations of traditional materials and methods.
The standard emphasizes the importance of field demonstration to validate innovative concepts and findings from laboratory research. It also highlights the value of documented case studies in evaluating emerging and maturing technologies, identifying successful applications, and identifying areas that require refinement. The standard includes nine papers selected from technical sessions held during the ACI Fall Convention, covering topics such as retrofit and strengthening of super- and substructure members, as well as new construction of bridges using internal FRP reinforcing and prestressing techniques.
The selected papers cover a range of topics, including the application of UHPC for reinforcing and strengthening concrete beams, FRP retrofitting and non-destructive evaluation for corrosion-deteriorated bridges, impact damage retrofit of RC bridge girders, shear strengthening of bridge trestle spans beams, and bridge substructure repairs with various types of FRP internal reinforcement. Other papers discuss the effect of CFRP strengthening on the behavior of older and newer bent caps in a widened concrete bridge, recent Canadian developments in unconventional reinforcing for concrete structures, and the design and application of FRP reinforced concrete two-span flat slab bridges and CFRP/GFRP reinforced substructures.
