Bridge Design - Steel and Composite Construction - Commentary
Also Known As:
AS 5100.6 Supp 1:2007 is a standard that provides guidelines and requirements for the design of steel and composite construction in bridges. The standard is applicable to various types of bridges, including road, railway, and pedestrian bridges. It also addresses the design requirements for structures made of wrought or cast iron, with the appropriate material properties and capacity reduction factors taken into consideration.
The standard excludes steel elements that are less than 3 mm in thickness due to practicality, concerns about corrosion, and the fact that such sections are not commonly used in bridge construction. Members made from thinner materials, which are usually cold-formed, fall within the scope of AS/NZS 4600, a different standard specifically for cold-formed steel structures. In addition, connections in elements less than 3 mm thick are better addressed by the provisions of AS/NZS 4600.
The standard specifies a limit of 450 MPa for the yield stress used in design. This limit is based on a lack of research data available for steel grades with higher yield stresses. However, the standard does not prohibit the use of steels with specified yield stresses greater than 450 MPa, as long as the design yield stress is limited to 450 MPa.
The standard also addresses the design of hollow section members specified in AS 1163. While most commonly cold-formed, hollow section members have traditionally been designed using the previous editions of the standard, as they were previously hot-rolled. Tests conducted on members manufactured in accordance with AS 1163 have confirmed the applicability of the standard's provisions for such members. Cold-formed hollow section members specified in AS 1163 with a wall thickness less than 3 mm should be designed according to AS/NZS 4600, as they are excluded from the provisions of the standard.
Finally, the standard includes specific sections dedicated to the design of composite steel construction, providing guidelines for the combination of steel and other materials in bridge construction.
