Standard ENStandard Test Method for Density and Air Content (Pressure Method) of Freshly Mixed Roller-Compacted Concrete
Also Known As:
ASTM C1849/C1849M-17 is a standard test method that is used to determine the density and air content of freshly mixed Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC). The test is exclusive of any air that may exist inside voids within aggregate particles and can be applied to normal-density or high-density aggregate particles. However, if the concrete being tested contains aggregate that would be retained on a 50-mm (2-in.) sieve, the air content of the total mixture is only approximated by the test.
This standard test method is applicable to RCC containing aggregate with a maximum size not greater than 50-mm (2-in.) and can be used to determine the air content of the unhardened RCC. It is important to note that the air content of hardened RCC may differ from the results obtained from this test method, depending on factors such as consolidation effort, uniformity and stability of air bubbles, accuracy of microscopic examination, and stage in the delivery at which the air content is determined.
The test method requires the use of specific apparatus, such as the vibrating hammer described in Test Method C1435/C1435M, and references other ASTM standards, such as Test Method C231/C231M for determining the aggregate correction factor. The standard also includes explanatory notes and footnotes that provide additional information, but these notes and footnotes are not considered as requirements of the standard.
