Standard ENStandard Guide for Evaluating Failure of Structural Sealant Glazing
Also Known As:
ASTM C1392-20 is a standard guide that provides a screening approach to detect failure of a structural sealant in a structural sealant glazing system. The purpose of this guide is to evaluate the extent of any failure of the structural sealant in an installed glazing system. This standard applies specifically to silicone sealants that are formulated and marketed for use in structural sealant glazing.
The evaluation program described in this guide measures the deflection of loaded lites, but does not directly measure any structural sealant failure. It is important for a qualified authority to interpret the data and evaluate the source of any increased deflection. Increased deflection may be attributed to structural sealant adhesive or cohesive failure, as well as other non-failure mechanisms such as a decrease in sealant modulus or a change in sealant joint dimensions. Selective destructive sampling of areas with increased deflections can help in evaluating the cause of the increased deflections.
It is emphasized that a qualified authority should specify the criteria described in Sections 8 and 9, interpret the results, and determine their significance for the structural sealant glazing system. The guide also mentions that there are no ISO standards similar or equivalent to this ASTM standard. The standard allows for the use of either metric units or other units, but requires that each system be used independently without combining values.
