ASTM C40/C40M-20 is a standard test method used to determine the presence of organic impurities in fine aggregates for concrete. The purpose of this test method is to provide a preliminary assessment of whether the fine aggregate meets the requirements specified in ASTM C33/C33M with regards to organic impurities.
The test involves examining the color of a sample of the fine aggregate. If the color of the sample is darker than the standard color, it indicates the possible presence of injurious amounts of organic impurities. In such cases, it is recommended to further test the effect of these organic impurities on the strength of mortar using ASTM Test Method C87/C87M.
