Standard ENStandard Test Method for Effect of Organic Impurities in Fine Aggregate on Strength of Mortar
Also Known As:
ASTM C87/C87M-17 is a standard test method that determines the effect of organic impurities in fine aggregate on the strength of mortar. The purpose of this test method is to determine whether the fine aggregate meets the requirements of Specification C33/C33M regarding organic impurities.
The test method is applicable to samples that have produced a supernatant liquid with a darker color than standard color plate No. 3 or color solution when tested in accordance with Test Method C40/C40M. This is an indication of the presence of organic impurities in the fine aggregate.
Many specifications allow for the acceptance of fine aggregate with a darker color in the C40/C40M test if this test method shows that the strength of mortar made with the unwashed fine aggregate is comparable to the strength of mortar made with the washed fine aggregate.
