Standard ENStandard Specification for Lap Cement Used with Asphalt Roll Roofing, Non-Fibered, and Fibered
Also Known As:
The ASTM D3019/D3019M-17 standard is a specification that outlines the physical requirements and testing procedures for lap cement used with asphalt roll roofing. Lap cement is a viscous material made up of asphalt dissolved in a volatile petroleum solvent, and it is used to bond overlapping sections of roll roofing.
The standard categorizes lap cement into three types. Type I lap cement is intended for use in the exposed-nailing method of roll roofing application and does not contain any mineral or other stabilizers. Type I is further divided into two grades, Grade 1 and Grade 2, which are differentiated by the type of asphalt used in their production.
Type II and Type III lap cements are suitable for use in the concealed-nailing method of roll roofing application. Type II contains short-fibered asbestos, while Type III contains mineral or other stabilizers but no asbestos.
The lap cements undergo various tests to ensure compliance with the standard. These tests include determining water content, distillation at specific temperatures, softening point of residue, solubility in trichloroethylene, and strength at a specified age.
