Standard ENStandard Specification for Asphalt Used in Dampproofing and Waterproofing
Also Known As:
The ASTM D449/D449M-03 (R2021) standard defines the requirements for three types of asphalt suitable for use in dampproofing and waterproofing applications. It covers the use of asphalt as a mopping coat, plying or mopping cement, and in the construction of membrane waterproofing systems with various materials such as felts, fabrics, and asphalt-impregnated glass mat.
The standard designates three types of asphalt: Type I, Type II, and Type III. Type I is a soft and adhesive asphalt that flows easily under the mop. It is suitable for use below grade under uniformly moderate temperature conditions, both during installation and in service. Type II is less susceptible than Type I, but still possesses good adhesive and self-healing properties. It is suitable for above-grade applications where it will not be exposed above a specified temperature. Type III is less susceptible to temperature than Type II and has good adhesive properties. It is suitable for above-grade applications on vertical surfaces exposed to direct sunlight or above a specified temperature.
To meet the standard, the asphalt must be prepared from crude petroleum using appropriate refining processes. Different physical tests are conducted to determine the properties of the asphalt, including softening point, flash point, penetration, ductility, and solubility in trichloroethylene.
