Standard ENStandard Specification for Hydrated Lime for Use in Asphalt Cement or Bituminous Paving Mixtures
Also Known As:
The ASTM C1097-19 standard is a specification that outlines the requirements for hydrated lime to be used in asphalt cement or bituminous paving mixtures. The hydrated lime can be of high calcium, dolomitic, or magnesian composition.
The specification includes the chemical composition requirements for calcium and magnesium oxides, carbon dioxide, unhydrated calcium and magnesium oxides, and free moisture of dry hydrates. These requirements are determined through chemical analysis.
In addition to the chemical composition, the particle size of the hydrated lime is also measured using a standardized spray nozzle and pressure gauge.
The standard highlights the benefits of using hydrated lime in asphalt mixtures, such as improved bonding between bitumen and aggregates, reduced susceptibility to moisture damage, and increased initial stiffness of the asphalt mixture.
It is important to note that this standard does not cover requirements for by-product lime.
