ASTM D7403-19 is a standard test method used to determine the residue of emulsified asphalt using low-temperature vacuum distillation. This test is performed at a temperature of 135°C (275°F) with a 60-minute distillation test using current distillation apparatus. The purpose of this method is to obtain quantitative measurements of residue in emulsified asphalts for service evaluation, quality control, and research purposes. It is important to note that the residues obtained from this distillation method are not equivalent to those obtained from the Test Method D6997, which uses a higher temperature of 260°C (500°F).

It is essential for competent and trained personnel to perform this test, and the equipment used must be properly calibrated and maintained to ensure accurate and reliable results. Compliance with Specification D3666, which outlines criteria for competent and objective testing, is recommended but not sufficient to guarantee reliable results. Other factors also contribute to the quality of results obtained. Therefore, following the suggestions of Specification D3666 or similar guidelines is advised to evaluate and control these factors.

This method is specifically designed for emulsified asphalts composed of a semisolid or liquid asphaltic base, water, and an emulsifying agent, with possible inclusion of polymeric materials. However, it is important to note that since there is currently no precision statement for this procedure, it is not recommended for buy/sell purposes at this time.
