Standard Test Method for Resistance to Wildfire Penetration of Eaves, Soffits and Other Projections

SKU146814735 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2017 Pages CountPages10

The ASTM E2957-17 standard provides a method for assessing the resistance of eave overhangs and other projections to fire penetration from direct flame impingement in a simulated external wildfire scenario. The purpose of this test method is to compare the relative performance of materials used as the exposed underside surfaces of eave overhangs and other projections.

The test method evaluates the ability of eave overhangs and projections to resist fire penetration from the exterior into the wall cavity or unexposed side of the test specimen under specific exposure conditions. It is applicable to eave overhangs, soffits of roof eaves, and cantilevered floor projections designed for use with combustible or noncombustible building envelopes.

However, there are limitations to this test method. It does not apply to vents or perforated materials used to enclose or cap eaves, soffits, and other projections, as separate test methods are available for testing their resistance to direct flame impingement and flame penetration. Additionally, the test method does not address interior or exterior flame spread, determine fire resistance characteristics in case of a fire originating within the building, or consider the heat contribution from burning materials beyond the prescribed fire exposure.

It's important to note that the results obtained from this test method are strictly valid only for the specific fire test conditions and construction tested. Any changes in test conditions or end-use conditions may not be accurately predicted by this test method. This standard does not incorporate all factors required for fire hazard or fire risk assessment of materials under actual fire conditions, and appropriate safety measures should be taken during the testing process.
