Standard Test Method for Determining the Fire Resistance of Continuity Head-of-Wall Joint Systems Installed Between Rated Wall Assemblies and Nonrated Horizontal Assemblies

SKU158833989 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2013 Pages CountPages16

ASTM E2837-13 (R2017) is a standard test method that evaluates the fire resistance of continuity head-of-wall joint systems installed between rated wall assemblies and nonrated horizontal assemblies. The purpose of this test method is to measure the performance of these joint systems under specified test conditions.

The standard specifies the test conditions and provides for measurements and evaluations such as the ability of the test specimen to undergo movement without reducing its fire resistance rating, the ability to prohibit the passage of flames and hot gases, transmission of heat through the specimen, and resistance to the passage of water during a hose stream test.

However, it should be noted that this test method does not provide information on the rated wall assembly or the degree to which the test specimen contributes to the fire hazard by generating smoke, toxic gases, or other products of combustion. It also does not measure the degree of control or limitation of the passage of smoke or products of combustion through the specimen.

The results obtained from this test method are valid only for the specified exposure conditions and cannot be used to predict changes in performance under different test conditions or end-use conditions. The purpose of this test method is to establish the fire resistance rating for continuity head-of-wall joint systems and their ability to maintain the continuity of fire resistance of the rated wall assembly when interfacing with a nonrated horizontal assembly during a fire exposure.

It is important to note that the test results do not determine the suitability of the continuity head-of-wall joint system, nonrated horizontal assembly, and rated wall assembly for use after the fire exposure. The test method does not provide quantitative information about the rate of leakage of smoke or gases but requires documentation and reporting of such phenomena.

The standard also highlights factors and fire characteristics that are not addressed by this test method, such as the performance of continuity head-of-wall joint systems constructed with components other than those tested and the cyclic movement capabilities of these systems under conditions other than those tested.

This standard references notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material, but they are not considered requirements of the standard. Fire testing is inherently hazardous, and adequate safeguards should be employed during the tests to ensure the safety of personnel and property.
