Standard Test Methods for Density of In-Place Soil and Rock Materials by the Water Replacement Method in a Test Pit

SKU155295287 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2021 Pages CountPages14

The ASTM D5030/D5030M-21 standard provides guidelines for determining the in-place density of soil and rock materials using water to fill a lined test pit. This standard is primarily used in construction projects involving earth embankments, road fills, and structure backfill.

The test methods described in this standard can be used for compacted soil and rock materials to ensure compliance with specified density requirements or a percentage of maximum density determined by laboratory compaction tests. It can also be used to determine the in-place density of natural soil deposits, aggregates, soil mixtures, or similar materials.

The standard includes two procedures: Procedure A, which determines the in-place density and density of the total material, and Procedure B, which determines the in-place density and density of the control fraction. The selection of the procedure depends on factors such as particle size and compaction requirements.

The accuracy and reliability of the test results depend on the competence of the personnel performing the test, as well as the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Compliance with Practice D3740, which evaluates testing capabilities, does not guarantee reliable results. Other factors, such as material variation and the purpose of obtaining the data, also need to be considered.

The test methods described in this standard are best suited for test pits with a volume between approximately 3 and 100 ft³ [0.08 and 3 m³], although larger excavations can also be tested. The standard provides guidelines for the size and shape of the test pit, including the use of circular metal templates with inside diameters of 3 ft [0.9 m] or more.

It is important to note that this standard is not recommended for materials that are soft, friable, or in a moisture condition that allows water seepage into the test pit. Material stability, resistance to deformation, and avoidance of volume changes during testing are crucial for obtaining accurate results.

The standard specifies the use of inch-pound units but includes conversions to the SI system. It also provides guidelines for significant digits and rounding of observed and calculated values, following the principles established in Practice D6026.
