Standard ENStandard Test Method for Density and Unit Weight of Soil in Place by the Rubber Balloon Method
Also Known As:
ASTM D2167-15 is a standard test method that is used to determine the density and unit weight of soil in place using the rubber balloon method. This test method is commonly used for natural inorganic soil deposits, soil-aggregate mixtures, or similar firm materials. It is often used as a basis for acceptance of compacted earthen materials in construction projects.
The purpose of this standard is to provide a field procedure for determining the in-place density and unit weight of soils. It can be used to assess the density of soils used in construction of earth embankments, road fill, and structural backfill. The test method is not recommended for soft or easily deformable soils, as they may undergo volume changes during testing. Additionally, soils containing crushed rock fragments or sharp edge materials that could puncture the rubber membrane should not be tested using this method.
It is important to note that the quality of the results produced by this standard depends on the competence of the personnel performing the test and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Compliance with practice standards is recommended to ensure reliable results. This test method provides a means of evaluating some of the factors that contribute to the reliability of the results, but it does not guarantee reliable results on its own.
