Standard Test Method for Density and Unit Weight of Soil in Place by Sand-Cone Method

SKU158224767 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2015 Pages CountPages8

ASTM D1556/D1556M-15e1 is a standard test method used to determine the density and unit weight of soil in place by the sand-cone method. The test is primarily used for compacted soils in the construction of earth embankments, road fill, and structural backfill. It serves as a basis for accepting soils that have been compacted to a specified density.

The test method can be applied to natural soil deposits, aggregates, soil mixtures, or similar materials. However, it is not recommended for soft or friable soils that crumble easily or for moisture conditions where water seeps into the hand-excavated hole. The precision of the test may be affected by soils that deform easily or undergo volume changes due to vibration or external loading.

The standard provides guidance on ensuring the accuracy and reliability of test results. It emphasizes the competence of personnel performing the test, as well as the suitability of equipment and facilities used. Compliance with ASTM D3740, which evaluates factors related to testing, sampling, and inspection, is recommended but does not guarantee reliable results.

Additionally, the standard outlines the conditions under which the test method is suitable or unsuitable. It is applicable for soils without significant amounts of rock or coarse materials exceeding 1½ inches in diameter. The test may not be suitable for organic, saturated, or highly plastic soils that would deform or compress during the excavation process. Granular soils with high void ratios or unstable sides in the test hole are also not ideal for this method.

The standard also addresses the use of inch-pound units and provides conversions to the SI system. It specifies guidelines for significant digits and rounding in accordance with Practice D6026. All measured or calculated values should conform to these guidelines when comparing against specified limits.
