Standard ENStandard Specification for Cold-Applied, Single-Component, Chemically Curing Silicone Joint Sealant for Portland Cement Concrete Pavements
Also Known As:
The ASTM D5893/D5893M-16 (R2021) standard is a specification for cold-applied, single-component, chemically curing silicone joint sealants used in Portland cement concrete pavements. It covers two types of sealants: Type NS (non-sag) and Type SL (self-leveling).
Type NS sealants are designed to resist sagging after application in horizontal joints and require tooling or forming into the joint to achieve the desired shape. Type SL sealants, on the other hand, have flow characteristics that allow them to form a smooth and level surface in horizontal joints without the need for tooling.
The standard does not address the properties required for sealants used in areas of Portland cement concrete pavements that are subjected to jet fuel or other fuel spillage, such as vehicle or aircraft refueling and maintenance areas.
The standard specifies various tests that the sealant specimens must undergo, including evaluation of cure, rheological properties, extrusion rate, tack-free time, effects of heat aging, bond characteristics in non-immersed, water-immersed, and oven-aged conditions, hardness, flow characteristics, rubber properties in tension (such as ultimate elongation and tensile stress), and effects of accelerated weathering.
