The ASTM D4592-12 (R2022) standard pertains to white or yellow preformed retroreflective pavement marking tapes that are designed to have a service life ranging from 3 to 6 months. These tapes are suitable for use on roads with an average daily traffic count of up to 15,000 vehicles.

The specification covers tapes used for longitudinal, transverse, or word/symbol pavement markings that provide visibility both during the day and at night. The tapes can be either Type I, which are removable, or Type II, which are nonremovable. They are composed of a reflective film coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and may or may not have a protective liner.

To meet the standard, the marking tape must be flexible and conform to the typical road pavement surface. It should also adhere to both asphalt and portland cement concrete roadway surfaces when applied. Additionally, the tape must be retroreflective, reflecting white or yellow, and must be readily visible when viewed with automobile headlights at night, meeting specified minimum reflective values.
