Standard ENStandard Specification for Preformed Retroreflective Pavement Marking Tape for Limited Service Life
Also Known As:
ASTM D4592-12 (R2017) is a standard specification that focuses on white or yellow preformed retroreflective pavement marking tapes. These tapes are designed to have a limited service life of typically 3 to 6 months and are suitable for roads with a daily traffic count of up to 15,000 vehicles.
The purpose of these tapes is to provide clear delineation on the road during both day and night, and they can be used for longitudinal, transverse, or word/symbol pavement markings. They are available in two types: Type I (removable) and Type II (nonremovable).
The marking tape is composed of a reflective film coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, and it may or may not have a protective liner. It should be flexible and conform to the typical road pavement surface. Moreover, it should adhere well to surfaces made of asphalt or portland cement concrete when applied.
One of the key requirements of the marking tape is that it must be retroreflective, meaning it should reflect white or yellow light and be easily visible when illuminated by automobile headlights at night. The minimum reflective values are specified to ensure adequate visibility and safety.
