Standard EN SampleStandard Test Method for Testing Side Force Friction on Paved Surfaces Using the Mu-Meter
Also Known As:
The ASTM E670-09 (R2020) standard is a test method that is used to measure the side force friction of paved surfaces using a device called a Mu-Meter. This standard acknowledges that side force friction data alone may have limited value in determining the suitability of paving materials or finishing techniques. However, when used in conjunction with other physical and chemical tests, the side force friction data can contribute to the characterization of pavement surfaces.
It is important to note that the values obtained through this test method may not necessarily agree or directly correlate with those obtained through other paved surface friction measuring methods.
The test method involves pulling the Mu-Meter, which consists of two freely rotating test wheels angled to the direction of motion, over a pavement surface at a constant speed and under a constant static load. This measurement provides data on the side force friction along the entire length of the test surface. The data can then be used with computerized algorithms to generate various results, including rolling averages, numeric and graphical representations, friction mapping, and reports approved by national airport regulators.
