Report / Survey EN SampleTest Method for Determining Fracture Energy of Asphalt-Aggregate Mixtures Using the Disk-Shaped Compact Tension Geometry
Also Known As:
The ASTM RR:D04-1040 standard describes a procedure for determining the fracture energy of asphalt-aggregate mixtures.
The test method involves using the disk-shaped compact tension (DCT) geometry, which consists of a disk specimen with a central notch and two opposite loading points. The specimen is loaded under controlled displacement until it fractures. The energy required to fracture the specimen is measured and reported as the fracture energy.
The standard provides detailed instructions for preparing the specimen, including the size and shape requirements. It also specifies the test equipment and loading conditions necessary for conducting the test. The test procedure includes applying a pre-crack to the specimen, loading it at a specified rate, and recording the load-displacement response.
To ensure the accuracy and precision of the test method, an interlaboratory study was conducted involving six different laboratories. Each laboratory received five Standard Gyratory Compactor (SGC) pills, which could produce 10 test specimens. The laboratories were instructed to conduct at least eight replicate tests for three different test parameters, allowing for the establishment of a precision statement for test method D7313.
