Standard ENStandard Test Method for Determining Fracture Energy of Asphalt Mixtures Using the Disk-Shaped Compact Tension Geometry
Also Known As:
ASTM D7313-20 is a standard test method used to determine the fracture energy of asphalt mixtures using the disk-shaped compact tension (DC[T]) geometry. The purpose of this test method is to assess the fracture resistance of asphalt mixtures and determine if they are susceptible to cracking, which can compromise their service life. The test method is applicable to specimens tested at temperatures of 10°C or below. The specimen geometry is primarily designed for 150 mm diameter specimens fabricated from Superpave gyratory compactors, commonly used in the asphalt mixture design process. However, it can also be adapted for forensic investigations using field cores of pavements.
The test method relies on the competence of the personnel conducting the test and the proper calibration and maintenance of the equipment used. Compliance with specification D3666 is recommended to ensure reliable results, but it does not guarantee complete reliability. The results obtained from this test method are dependent on various factors, including the stiffness of the asphalt binder, aggregate type, and the quality of the equipment and personnel involved. Adjustments in mixture design or binder grade may not be sufficient to improve fracture energy if the aggregate type is not suitable.
The fracture energy parameter, determined through this test method, is particularly useful in evaluating asphalt mixtures with ductile asphalt binders, such as polymer-modified asphalt mixtures. It has been shown to provide a broader discrimination between materials compared to the indirect tensile strength parameter. The test method is based on the disk-shaped compact tension geometry, which is a circular specimen with a single edge notch loaded in tension. The test procedure describes the apparatus, instrumentation, specimen fabrication, and analysis required for determining the fracture energy of asphalt mixtures and similar materials with quasi-brittle behavior.
