Standard ENStandard Test Method for Evaluation of Durability of Rock for Erosion Control Under Freezing and Thawing Conditions
Also Known As:
ASTM D5312/D5312M-12 (R2013) is a standard test method that evaluates the durability of rock for erosion control under freezing and thawing conditions. The test is designed to determine the resistance of individual pieces of natural stone to deterioration caused by weathering action, as this affects the stability of rock placements for erosion control.
The test method involves subjecting rock slabs to freezing and thawing cycles, simulating natural weather conditions. The rock slabs, prepared according to specified procedures, should be representative of erosion control rock and its weaknesses. The test is applicable for various rock materials used for erosion control, such as breakwater stone, armor stone, riprap, and gabion sized rock.
It is important to note that the test method does not provide an absolute value for rock durability, but rather an indication of resistance to freezing and thawing. Therefore, the results of this test method should not be the sole basis for determining the durability of rock. Other test methods listed in Practice D4992 should be used in conjunction with this test method.
There are a couple of limitations to consider. Firstly, the size of the cut rock slab specimens may not capture all internal defects present in the larger rock samples used in construction. Careful examination of the rock source and proper sampling are important to minimize this limitation. Secondly, the test is time-intensive, requiring up to 55 freezing-thawing cycles and may take several months to complete the entire procedure.
