Standard ENStandard Test Method for Evaluation of Durability of Rock for Erosion Control Under Freezing and Thawing Conditions
Also Known As:
The ASTM D5312/D5312M-21 standard is a test method that evaluates the durability of rock for erosion control under freezing and thawing conditions. The purpose of this test is to assess the performance of rock slabs when exposed to cycles of freezing and thawing, simulating natural weather conditions. The test method is applicable to various types of erosion control rock materials, such as breakwater stone, armor stone, riprap, and gabion-sized rocks.
However, there are limitations to this test method. Firstly, the size of the cut rock slabs used may not fully represent the internal defects present in larger rock samples used in construction. Proper examination of the rock source and sampling techniques are necessary to minimize this limitation. Secondly, the test requires the rock slabs to undergo up to 55 freezing-thawing cycles, which makes the test time-consuming. This limits its practical use as a frequent quality control test during construction.
The use of reclaimed concrete and other materials beyond the scope of this test method is not considered. Additionally, the standard provides guidelines for the use of inch-pound units in terms of force and mass, and emphasizes the importance of complying with significant digits and rounding practices.
