Standard ENStandard Test Method for Bulk Specific Gravity and Density of Compacted Bituminous Mixtures Using Coated Samples
Also Known As:
ASTM D1188-07 (R2015) is a standard test method that is used to determine the bulk specific gravity and density of compacted bituminous mixtures using coated samples. The specific gravity of a material is defined as the ratio of its density to the density of a reference substance, which in this case is water. This test method is useful in calculating the percent air voids in the compacted bituminous mixtures, as specified in Test Method D3203.
The test method requires the use of Parafilm-coated specimens of the bituminous mixtures. It should be used for samples that contain open or interconnecting voids, or absorb more than 2% of water by volume, or both. The bulk specific gravity of the compacted mixtures is an important parameter that can be used to calculate the unit weight of the mixture.
