Code of Practice for Earthworks
Also Known As:
BS 6031:2009 is a standard It provides recommendations and guidance for unreinforced earthworks, excluding dams, as well as temporary excavations such as trenches and pits. The standard reflects the actual processes followed in typical earthworks projects, where design decisions are often made by multiple parties including the employer, consultant, contractor, and construction validation team.
This revision of BS 6031 aligns with the widespread UK practice of using the Specification for Highway Works (SHW) 600 series for earthworks construction. The standard is organized into clauses that cover the entire earthworks process, from planning and design to construction, adoption/approval, and asset management. It recognizes that construction of new earthworks and remediation or repair of existing earthworks have similarities and differences. Wherever possible, the clauses cover both activities.
BS 6031 is intended for use by civil engineers, construction workers, consultants, and contractors involved in earthworks projects. The standard includes sections on general information, design and management of earthworks, and temporary excavations. It also provides informative annexes on potential modes of slope failure and includes a bibliography, list of figures, and list of tables.
