The DIN EN 16907-1 standard provides definitions, principles, and general guidelines for the planning, design, and specification of earthworks. Earthworks involve modifying the earth's surface to create structures for construction or other activities in various fields such as transportation infrastructure, industrial and residential buildings, water engineering, flood defense, coastal protection, harbors, and airports.
The standard covers a wide range of applications, including the construction of embankments, earth and rock fill dams, noise barriers, visual barriers, landscaping embankments, backfilling of mines and quarries, and tailings dams. It emphasizes the use of natural or recycled materials and the proper handling of these materials to meet specific requirements.
While the standard applies to all types of earth-structures, it excludes certain specific types of works such as trenches and small earthworks. Additionally, it does not address ground improvement techniques like piling, jet grouting, deep soil mixing, vertical drains, or stone columns.
