ViaFriction operates using an electrically braked test wheel, which measures the longitudinal friction coefficient (LFCN) of the pavement. It offers several operating modes, including fixed slip, fixed slip speed, and variable slip. These modes allow for flexibility in testing parameters, such as the ability to set slip ratios ranging from 1% to 75%.

To conduct the measurement, the test wheel is dragged over a pre-wetted pavement at controlled speed conditions. The test wheel remains parallel to the direction of motion and perpendicular to the pavement surface. For skid resistance measurements on winter roads, pre-wetted pavement is not necessary.

In addition to skid resistance measurements, the ViaFriction device can also determine the macrotexture of the pavement surface by utilizing a laser system. This system measures the mean profile depth (MPD) of the pavement's macrotexture on dry surfaces. The measurement is performed in the same path as the skid resistance measurement, ensuring accurate correlation between the two parameters.
