BS 8442:2022 is a standard that sets the requirements and test methods for miscellaneous road traffic signs and devices. It is aimed at public sector highway authorities, owners of private infrastructure, local authorities, consultants, engineers, test houses, equipment manufacturers, specialist highway contractors, members of professional associations, and road sign manufacturers.

The standard covers a wide range of portable signs, barriers, self-supporting signs, "Stop/Go" and "Stop/Works" signs, school crossing patrol signs, traffic delineators, flap signs, pedestrian crossing beacons, internally illuminated posts, twin amber flashing light units, non-retroreflecting road studs, and retroreflective self-righting bollards. It specifies the requirements and tests for these devices to ensure they meet safety and design standards. It is important to note that the standard does not cover road studs with active light sources.

The use of BS 8442 benefits the industry by enabling the manufacture of compliant road traffic signs that are not covered by other standards.
