The AS 3600:1994 standard provides minimum requirements for the design and construction of concrete structures and members that include reinforcing steel or tendons, or both. Additionally, it sets out requirements for plain concrete members. It should be noted that this edition of the standard supersedes the previous edition, AS 3600 - 1988, and will be referenced in the Building Code of Australia.

The standard applies to structures made of concrete with a characteristic compressive strength at 28 days ranging from 20 MPa to 50 MPa and a saturated, surface-dry density ranging from 1800 kg/m3 to 2800 kg/m3. It can also be applied to concrete bridges, but the relevant design standards of the bridge authority must be used when applicable. The general principles of concrete design and construction in this standard can be applied to other types of concrete or structures not specifically mentioned herein.

It is important to note that the design of structures or members covered by this standard should be carried out by or under the supervision of an engineer as defined in Clause 1.6.2. There is also ongoing consideration to extend the application of the standard to structures with a characteristic compressive strength of concrete greater than 50 MPa, although further research and modification of requirements may be necessary before such an extension can be incorporated.
