Standard Test Method for Determining the Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binder Using a Dynamic Shear Rheometer

SKU132136364 Published by ASTM International, formerly American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM Publication Date2015 Pages CountPages16

The ASTM D7175-15 standard is a procedure that determines the dynamic shear modulus and phase angle of asphalt binders when subjected to dynamic shear using parallel plate geometry. This test method is applicable to asphalt binders with dynamic shear modulus values ranging from 100 Pa to 10 MPa, typically obtained at temperatures between 4 and 88°C and at a frequency of 10 rad/s. It is designed for specification testing purposes and provides linear viscoelastic properties of asphalt binders. However, it should be noted that this test method is not comprehensive and does not fully characterize the viscoelastic properties of asphalt binders.

The standard specifies that the test temperature should be chosen based on the temperature conditions experienced by the pavement in the intended geographical area. This ensures that the rheological properties of the asphalt binder are evaluated under realistic temperature conditions. The complex shear modulus and phase angle determined by this test method indicate the stiffness and resistance of the asphalt binder to deformation under load. These parameters are used to calculate performance-related criteria in accordance with Specification D6373 or AASHTO Standard M320.

The ASTM D7175-15 standard is suitable for testing unaged asphalt binders, as well as materials that have been aged in accordance with Test Method D2872, Practice D6521, or both. However, it is important to note that the procedure is limited to asphalt binders that contain particles with a largest dimension smaller than 250 µm.
