The ASTM D226/D226M-17 standard is a specification for asphalt-saturated organic felt used in roofing and waterproofing. The standard includes two types of asphalt-saturated felts: type I, also known as No. 15 asphalt felt, and type II, also known as No. 30 asphalt felt. The felts are made by saturating a single thickness of dry felt with an asphaltic saturant during the manufacturing process.
The purpose of this standard is to ensure that the asphalt-saturated felts used in roofing and waterproofing meet the required specifications. The felts are intended to be used with asphalts that conform to the requirements of other ASTM specifications, such as Specification D312/D312M for built-up roofs and Specification D449/D449M for waterproofing systems.
The standard also includes methods for determining the openness of the perforations in the saturated felts. These perforations are important for the proper functioning and performance of the felts in roofing and waterproofing applications.
