The main purpose of these sheet materials is to inhibit moisture loss during the curing period of concrete and, for certain types of materials, to reduce temperature rise caused by sun radiation. The standard includes different types of sheet materials: curing papers (regular and white), polyethylene films (clear and white opaque), and white burlap-polyethylene sheets.

The sheet materials specified in this standard must be tough, strong, and resilient, capable of withstanding normal use without puncturing or tearing. White curing paper, white polyethylene film, and white burlap-polyethylene sheet must have specific levels of daylight reflectance when measured. Curing paper consists of two sheets of kraft paper bonded together with a bituminous material, embedded with cords or strands of fiber. White polyethylene film is made from polyethylene resins and may contain white pigment for opacity. White burlap-polyethylene sheet is composed of burlap coated on one side with white opaque polyethylene.
