BS EN 13381-4:2013 is a European standard that provides a test method for determining the contribution of applied passive fire protection systems to the fire resistance of structural steel members, specifically beams or columns without openings in the web. The standard is not applicable to tension members without further evaluation. It covers a range of steel sections, design temperatures, and fire protection classification periods.

The standard outlines the fire test procedures, which involve exposing the fire protection system to the standard temperature/time curve specified in EN 1363-1. The test evaluates the ability of the fire protection system to remain attached to the steelwork and provides data on its thermal characteristics. The collected data can be used as input for calculating the fire resistance of steel structural members according to EN 1993-1-2 and EN 1994-1-2.

BS EN 13381-4:2013 also includes an assessment procedure for analyzing the test data. This procedure establishes correction factors and practical constraints for the use of the fire protection system under fire test conditions (physical performance), as well as the thermal properties of the system based on temperature data from testing short steel sections (thermal performance). The standard defines the limits of applicability of the assessment results and permits their direct application to different steel sections, grades, and fire protection systems.
