BS EN 13481-5:2012+A1:2017 is a European standard that specifies the performance requirements for fastening systems used in railway track applications. This standard specifically focuses on fastening systems for slab tracks where the rail is either on the surface of the concrete or embedded in a channel.

The scope of this standard covers fastening systems in Categories A-D as defined in EN 13481-1:2012, with specific criteria outlined in Table 1. These fastening systems are suitable for attaching rails to concrete or asphalt slabs and embedded rails in non-ballasted tracks, and must meet the maximum axle loads and minimum curve radii specified in Table 1.

The standard applies to both direct and indirect fastening systems that act on the foot and/or web of the rail. It also includes adhesive and mechanical fastening systems for embedded rail, excluding rail cast into road pavements. It should be noted that the maximum axle load requirements for Categories A and B do not apply to maintenance vehicles.

For track forms with resiliently supported concrete elements, such as rail seat blocks or sleepers mounted in elastomeric "boots", these elements and their resilient support are considered part of the elastic fastening system. However, if the track form includes resiliently supported concrete elements with multiple supporting elements per rail, such as floating slabs, these elements are considered part of the slab and not the fastening system.

It is important to note that this standard only applies to fastening systems for rail sections specified in EN 13674-1 or EN 13674-4, excluding 49E4. It does not cover fastening systems for other rail sections, rigid fastening systems, or special fastening systems used at bolted joints or glued joints.
