The DIN EN 13481-5 standard sets out the performance requirements for fastening systems used in ballastless tracks. The standard applies to fastening systems in categories A-D, as defined in EN 13481-1, for attaching rails to concrete or steel elements in ballastless tracks. This includes tracks on open deck bridges and embedded rails in ballastless tracks.

The standard specifies the maximum design axle load and minimum curve radius for each fastening category, as outlined in Table 1. There are separate requirements for fastening systems that act on the foot and/or web of the rail, including direct and indirect fastening systems. The standard applies to rail sections included in EN 13674-1 or EN 13674-4, excluding 49E4.

The standard does not cover fastening systems for other rail sections or rigid fastening systems. It also excludes special fastening systems used at bolted or glued joints, as well as low clamping force fastenings used to mitigate track-bridge interaction effects. The requirements specified in this standard are for the type approval of complete fastening systems.

In track forms that include rail seat blocks or sleepers mounted in "boots," the concrete element and its resilient support are considered part of the elastic fastening system. Floating slabs with more than one fastening per rail are considered part of the ballastless track and not the fastening system.
