Standard EN SampleRailway Applications - Track - Safety Protection on the Track During Work - Common Solutions and Technologies - Technical Requirements for Track Warning Systems (TWS)
Also Known As:
BS EN 16704-2-1:2016 is a European standard that establishes the minimum requirements for Track Warning Systems (TWS) used to alert individuals about approaching trains and rail vehicles while they are working on or near the track. These systems may also have additional functions that can influence the movement of the trains, such as stopping or passing.
The scope of this standard includes systems, sub-systems, and components within the TWS, including those with software. It applies to new TWS, as well as the integration of new systems into existing TWS and modifications made in accordance with this standard. It is also recommended to use this standard for single warning units, such as simple electrical horns.
However, this standard does not cover certain aspects. It does not apply to hazards that may arise during the installation or removal of TWS due to trains and rail vehicles on the lines. It also does not cover hazards caused by the improper use of TWS, the improper behavior of persons working on or near the track, or the unauthorized presence of individuals on or near the track. Additionally, CO2 horns (tyfons), human-operated pressure signal horns, flags, detonators, or machine warning systems according to UIC 644 are not covered. Moreover, national safety regulations for planning and operating TWS on tracks are not included in this standard.
